Samsung’s gearing up to release the latest addition to the Galaxy family, and it’s a pretty big addition. Well, in two dimensions, anyway. It’s also going to be their thinnest smartphone ever.
This is the Galaxy A8, and it popped up recently on not one buttwo certification websites: the FCC and TENAA (China’s equivalent to the FCC). The documents that accompanied Samsung’s filings included a few key details about the new phone, including its thickness. The A8 measures just 5.94mm.
That makes it almost half a millimeter thinner than its predecessor, the Galaxy A7, which is currently Samsung’s thinnest. How does it stack up to the competition, say Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus? The Galaxy A8 is almost 20% slimmer despite having a slightly larger 5.7-inch display.
Impressively, even though the Galaxy A8 breaks the 6mm threshold Samsung also managed to shave off the camera bump. The 16MP shooter sits flush with the back cover, and that’s no small feat. Apple didn’t manage to do it on the iPhone 6/6 Plus, and LG’s engineers had a heck of a time doing it on the G4.
What else did the filings reveal about the A8? It’s powered by an octacore Snapdragon 615 processor, sports 2GB of RAM, and has 16GB of internal storage. As for the battery, Samsung still managed to squeeze a 3050mAh unit inside its scrawny profile. There’s one more important detail lurking in the FCC and TENAA docs. The Galaxy A8 only supports LTE band 41, which indicates that this particular model is only heading to China. You’ll have to wait for another variant to pop up if you want to get your hands on Samsung’s thinnest phone ever.
